Onomatopoeia

This week's word is onomatopoeia.  It is a noun that means "a word (or the formation of one) that sounds like what it describes".  It's a fun word to say (on-uh-mah-tuh-pee-uh), and words that are onomatopoeic are fun, too!  Here are a few that I can think of:

tick tock                                       

BANG!

                                     hiss

ROAR!                          

hiccup

                CRASH!

zip

    Onomatopeias are always fun (even if the word itself is nearly impossible to spell). I'm a pretty big fan of them in other languages as well.

    In Japan, a cat says "nyan" and a frog says "kerokero." They even have a word for staring, "jiiiiii," though I'm not sure if that counts as an onomatopeia.
