Murmur and Murmuration

The word murmur [mur-mer] is a noun meaning "a low, continuous sound".  It can also be used as a verb meaning "to make a low or indistinct sound, especially continuously".  I think it's a fun word to say, and I love how the sound of the word creates its own murmur!

I relaxed under the weeping willow tree,
listening to the murmur of the nearby brook.

Puzzling over the complicated instruction sheet,
the girl shook her head and murmured.

Murmuration [mur-muh-rey-shuhn] is a noun that can be used interchangeably with the noun murmur:

I relaxed under the weeping willow tree,
listening to the murmuration of the nearby brook.

A murmuration is also the name for a flock of starlings.  When the flock takes to the sky, the birds fly as one in an amazing murmuration "dance".  Check out the YouTube video below to see one:

The sight of the murmuration
in the sky above me took my breath away!

How would you use murmur or murmuration in a sentence?

  1. I loved that video, so cool! I didn't know about this word definition for the starlings. Thanks for sharing Janelle!
