I wanted to share a suitable, fitting word for Banned Books Week, and finally decided on expunge [ik-spuhnj]. Expunge is a verb meaning "to strike or blot out; erase; obliterate; wipe out or destroy". I like the sound of the word. It always makes me think "ex-sponge".
A few parents felt that the book was inappropriate
for young children and wanted
to expunge all copies from the school library.
Seeing the hurt in his eyes, she wished she could
expunge the hurtful words she'd said, take them back
and wipe them from his memory.
