A poem is portable.

"A poem is portable.
You can carry it around with you
in your head for days
while you work on it in secret."

~ Maxine Kumin,
in The Place My Words are Looking For

When I first read this quote years ago, I pictured someone walking around with a small suitcase (or maybe a fancy bag like the one above) filled with slips of scrawled-on paper -- poems just waiting to be finished. The image makes me smile. I know that I have often carried poems I'm working on around in my head. Have you?
